The Royal Oak 88 Bishops Bridge Road London W2 5AA This pub was recently bought by Young’s, tarted up and re-christened The Porchester, but there was a time in the 1970s when it was a Truman pub called The Railway Tap as this photo-still from The Sweeney cop show demonstrates. In the 70s it was not the sort of place you’d want to look at anyone funny, if you know what I mean. The roughest pub in Bayswater, by all accounts. Now it desperately tries to cultivate a local ambience although more than half of its clientele are tourists from the many nearby budget hotels and guest houses. website
